Society of St. Vincent de Paul Baton Rouge

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers the following services:

  • The Society offers a hot meal in their Dining Room from 11:30am-1pm.
  • The original Bishop Ott Shelter opened in December of 1991. This program serves homeless men at its Plank Road location. In 1997, the Society opened the Bishop Ott Shelter at 1623 Convention St. (225) 383-7343.  At both these shelters, we offer more than just a bed and a meal. We help the homeless find employment, improve their education, receive substance abuse treatment and get back on their feet.  In addition to our night shelters for men, we have a Day Center for homeless women and children. In December of 2001, we opened our new Bishop Ott Shelter for Women and Children (also 1623 Convention St.) (225) 383-7341. This 36-bed facility is equipped with separate rooms which allows us to serve both single women and families.
  • Community Pharmacy:  The pharmacy provides prescription medicines free of charge to those who are unable to pay for them (1647 Convention St.).  Once a patient is referred to us, our volunteer screeners check to make sure they are eligible for our service. Eligibility is determined on the basis of income and expenses, and only the truly needy receive assistance. Applicants can obtain additional information about eligibility requirements by calling the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy at (225) 383-7450.  The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.  The pharmacist is on duty Monday through Friday from 8:30am-12:30pm.
  • In Baton Rouge we now have stores located at Plank Road, Staring Lane and Government Street. We also have stores in Gonzales, New Roads, Brusly/Addis, and Hammond. Our stores provide more than just a place where customers can purchase items at bargain basement prices; any revenues produced by our stores are put back into our programs to assist the needy. Through our St. Vincent de Paul Conferences, we also provide clothes, bedding, appliances, furniture and household items free of charge to those in need.
  • Uniforms for Kids:  The Uniforms for Kids Program has distributed school uniforms to poor and homeless children. Please go to the website and click on “Programs” then “Uniforms for Kids” to read more about the program.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page you can click on a link to see the eligibility information for the program.
  • Thirst for Justice:  Thirst for Justice is a legal clinic where the underprivileged in the Baton Rouge community will have the opportunity to consult with an attorney. Once an attorney has assessed the client’s situation, the client may be referred to an agency that will possibly place the case with a volunteer attorney. To qualify, the individual’s household income must be below the federal guidelines for poverty.
