Memphis Union Mission

Provides help for the homeless, families, the hungry, and others in need.  Their mission is to minister to the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of men, women and families who are homeless, addicted, and in crisis.  Both men and women programs are available.

Services:

FOOD

  • A meal is a precious gift for the men, women, and children who join us each day for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner at Memphis Union Mission. For many, the food we provide may be the only nutrition they receive.
  • Every day of the year, the Mission provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each year, we provide over 313,000 meals for the hungry.
  • Lunch is free and open to the public. Lunch guests should arrive no later than 11 a.m. Dinner is reserved for overnight guests.

SHELTER

  • Many homeless men live in fear of being robbed or physically attacked. And extreme temperatures can make sleeping on the streets further dangerous.
  • That’s why providing safe, clean shelter for our overnight guests is so important. Doing so gives hope to our guests, and communicates God’s love to them in a practical way.
  • To create a physically safe environment for all of our guests, we do not tolerate violence of any kind, nor do we allow drugs, alcohol, or weapons in the building. Any guest bringing these into our facility is immediately required to leave so that we can maintain a safe environment for everyone else.
  • When our shelter beds are full, particularly on cold nights, we set up over 100 additional temporary beds in our chapel and an additional 100 temporary beds at our Opportunity Center.

DAY SHELTER

  • Being on the streets can be dangerous, so we do what we can to encourage homeless individuals to stay off the streets and come into our facilities to get help.
  • One way we do so is by keeping our Emergency Shelter at 383 Poplar Ave. and our Opportunity Center at 600 Poplar Ave. open to the public during the day. This allows guests to access our services, and helps to discourage loitering.

CLOTHING

  • A clean set of clothing can restore a homeless person’s sense of dignity, and can enable them to gain employment. That’s why we keep our clothes closet full of fresh shirts, pants, shoes, socks, underwear, coats, and accessories.
  • Memphis Union Mission does not operate a thrift store, and clothing is provided at no charge.

HYGIENE

  • Personal hygiene can provide a homeless person with a new outlook. This is why our homeless guests receive hot showers with soap and shampoo every day. Our guests, men and women, can also receive personal hygiene kits when available to take with them.

MEDICAL CLINIC

  • Thanks to our partnership with Christ Community Health Services and Baptist Memorial Healthcare, Memphis Union Mission hosts a free medical clinic for the homeless every Monday. Guests have access to a nurse and doctor, and referrals are provided, if necessary.

EXTENDED STAY

  • Men who are employed or receiving disability are eligible to stay on an extended-stay basis at our Opportunity Center at 600 Poplar Ave.
  • This facility features smaller, quieter dorm rooms and a positive environment for those who have demonstrated greater inititative and responsibility.
  • For more information, please contact Randy Daniels at (901) 526-8403, ext. 1008.

The Iron-on-Iron Program

  • The Iron-On-Iron Program is Memphis Union Mission’s long-term, Christ-centered recovery program for men.
  • It is a one-year intensive residential program, where the emphasis is on healing the total person, recovery from life-controlling problems and preparation for successful living. It consists of three distinct phases, each having a special focus and established goals, and each one conducted at various locations in the Memphis area.

Moriah House

  • Women whose lives have been shattered by domestic abuse, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and prostitution can receive wholeness and restoration at Moriah House.
  • Moriah House is Memphis Union Mission’s long-term recovery program for women and their children. This ministry accepts up to 15 women and their children and accommodates them in individual suites with private baths.
  • The ultimate objective is for these women and their families to encounter new life through a relationship with Jesus Christ and emerge as fulfilled, productive members of the community.
  • The program receives clients by referral. Women in residence have a structured schedule, consisting of chores, physical exercise, meal times, Bible studies and counseling sessions. All activities are facilitated by Moriah House’s four staff members, as well as community volunteers. Women in the program also learn practical skills like managing a budget, pursuing an education and raising a family.
