Veteran’s Benefits

The Campus will not impose on any Covered Individual any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a Covered Individual borrow additional funds because of a Covered Individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the Campus due to the delayed disbursement of funding or payment to be provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided the Covered Individual: (1) furnishes the Campus with a certificate of eligibility for entitlement to educational assistance under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation, or Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill no later than the first day a Covered Individual starts his/her program of study for which the individual has indicated the individual wishes to use the individual’s entitlement to educational assistance; (2) submits a written request to use such entitlement; and (3) provides additional information necessary for the proper certification of enrollment by the Campus. For purposes of this section, Covered Individual means any student who is entitled to educational assistance under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation, or Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits.

Approval of a student’s eligibility to receive any veteran’s benefits is within the sole discretion of the Veterans Administration, and Remington College campuses and other educational institutions have no ability to influence such determinations, for those that qualify.

Many students are eligible for GI Bill® benefits and/or tuition assistance based on their prior or current military service. Active duty military students may be eligible for tuition assistance through their branch of service or stationed base.

The Montgomery GI Bill® (MGIB) is available for those who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. MGIB encompasses both the Montgomery GI Bill®-Active Duty (Chapter 30) and The Montgomery GI Bill®-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606).

Under Chapter 30, Active Duty members enroll and pay $100 per month for 12 months; and are then entitled to receive a monthly education benefit once they have completed a minimum service obligation. Under Chapter 1606, a reservist must be actively drilling and have a 6-year obligation in the Selected Reserve to be eligible.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. Yellow Ribbon

If you are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition or fees, additional funds may be available for your education program without an additional charge to your entitlement. This program provides educational assistance to spouses of Active Duty members towards an Associates or Certificate program. Transfer of Education Benefit (TEB)

Post 9/11 GI Bill® to Dependents Eligible active duty service members may be able to transfer their unused Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) benefit to their spouses or dependent children, while on active duty. This benefit may cover 100% of tuition and fees up to an amount established by the VA per fiscal year (Aug 1st – July 31st). Fry Scholarship

This scholarship provides the Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) to children of service members who have died in the line of duty after 9/10/2001. Students who are entitled to this benefit may have a significant portion of their tuition covered. Effective January 1, 2015, the law expands eligibility for the Fry Scholarship to include surviving spouses of members of the Armed Forces who died or die in the line of duty after 9/10/2001. Chapter 35: Survivor and Dependents Assistance

This program provides educational assistance to spouses and dependents of veterans who have died or are totally and permanently disabled, as a result of their service, and may be able to assist with the cost of tuition and fees. This benefit pays directly to the student, so you will need to arrange a payment plan with your financial aid officer. The courses must be offered by schools that are registered in GoArmyEd and are accredited by accrediting agencies that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Air Force

The Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of an Airman’s professional and personal self-development goals. Starting October 01, 2002 the amount of coverage that the Air Force Tuition Assistance provided increase to 100% from 75%. Caps are in place to limit the amount of coverage that Air Force tuition assistance provides per credit hour.

Navy

Tuition Assistance (TA) is the Navy’s educational financial assistance program. It provides active duty personnel funding for tuition costs for courses taken in an off-duty status at a college, university or vocational/technical institution, whose regional or national accreditation is recognized by the Department of Education. A list of approved accrediting agencies may be found here. For a list of national accrediting agencies; or on this same web page click on “Regional Institutional Accrediting Agencies” to see list of regional accrediting agencies.

Navy TA pays for both classroom and independent study/distance learning courses, regardless of course length. Courses must be offered in Semester Hours, or Quarter Hours. The credit earned must show on the institution’s transcript.

Marines

Tuition Assistance (TA) offers financial assistance to Marine service members who elect to pursue Off-Duty or Voluntary Education.t

Effective October 1, 2002, for postsecondary education, from vocational certification through graduate study, TA will fund up to 100% of institution charges for tuition, instructional fees, laboratory fees, computer fees and mandatory enrollment fees combined. Funding will not exceed $250 per semester hour equivalent and $4,500 per individual per fiscal year. Combinations of the different educational levels will not exceed the fiscal cap.

Coast Guard

The Coast Guard currently provides tuition assistance (TA) to all uniformed personnel (regular and drilling reservists), civilian employees, and commissioned Public Health Service officers who are serving with the Coast Guard to fund off-duty courses related to the Coast Guard’s missions or to the applicant’s career and professional development. As the budget allows, the Coast Guard pays tuition costs for academic courses as follows:

  • up to $250 per semester hour or
  • up to $166.67 per quarter hour and
  • up to a maximum of $4,500 per fiscal year.

This is an education benefit for service members who have served on active duty for at least 90 days after 9/10/2001, or were discharged with a service connected disability after 30 consecutive days. An honorable discharge (character of service) is required for veterans. Individuals who are entitled to 100% of this benefit can have their entire cost of tuition and fees covered when eligible. Service members who have paid into this benefit while on active duty may have a significant portion of their tuition and fees covered. Chapter 1606: Selective Reserve Montgomery GI Bill®

This program is for members of the Selective Reserve and National Guard who have enlisted or re-enlisted in the select reserve with an obligation to serve 6 or more years on or after July 1st 1985. In order to be eligible for this benefit, the member will have had to complete their IDAT (initial date active training). Chapter 1606 expires once a service member has separated. This benefit pays directly to the student; arrangements for tuition and fees payment will need to be made with your Remington College financial aid representative. Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

REAP is an education benefit to assist Reserve and National Guard members called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) for at least 90 cumulative days after 9/11/2001. This benefit pays directly to the student and can be used toward the cost of tuition and fees, so you will need to arrange a payment plan with your financial aid officer. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2016 ended REAP on November 25, 2015. Some individuals will remain eligible for REAP benefits until November 25, 2019; while others are no longer eligible for REAP benefits. If you have questions about your eligibility for REAP or Post-9/11 benefits, please call the VA at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (7 a.m. – 6 p.m. CST Monday – Friday) to speak with an Education Call Center Agent. Kickers & Additional Contributions

A kicker is part of an enlistment contract and is a fixed dollar amount that will be disbursed in even installments over the course of the entitlement period for Chapter 30 and 1606 recipients. The VA should automatically pay this benefit as an addition to the normal entitlement amount paid each month to the veteran. If not, the veteran should contact the VA Regional Office processing his or her claim. No additional paperwork is needed.
